Today in art class we learned about the potter's wheel. We watched a video that explained the basics. Did you know that the angle of which your arm/hand is turned can affect the outcome of your project? After long periods of time it can injure your wrist. Another important tip is to always get the clay ready before working with it. An easy way to do just that is to knead it like you would bread. This is to try to break up air bubbles before firing it in the kiln. If there are still bubbles it could break and destroy your project. I also learned about the tools for the process of potting. A is one of the most important of all the tools. It helps to get the exact size and shape you need to make a project. Another tool is a wire clay cuttersponge. Sponges can be used for a number of things, one being able to keep the clay from getting dry on the potter's wheel. I've learned from experience that using it can really help make the process easier. One more of many is a . rib or scrapper They can help with the shaping and smoothing of pots. Ribs and scrappers are a lot alike, but with a closer look you can tell they are very different. Ribs are usually made from rubber, while scrappers can be made from steel, wood, or rubber. Scrappers are also much lighter than ribs are. Most potters use both of them for many of the same tasks. Below are some pictures of these tools. |

With art and the potter's wheel there are so many possibilities of what you could do. This proves to be the same in the real world, too. Don't just limit yourself to one thing when you can do so much more. Take Doug Reynolds for example, he does do the potter's wheel, but he also makes other things. He makes art out of tile and other pieces. You could say that "Oh, I'm doing well at this, so I'm good. I don't need to try anything else." But how will you know if you never even try? Everyone can do so much more than just one thing. Not only in art but in life, too.
